Fresh Market Update: What’s Looking Good This Week | Week Ending 5 July

There is plenty to love in fresh this week, with winter favourites, great-value staples and beautiful seasonal produce arriving across Earth Markets stores.

From comforting Kent pumpkin and bargain baby broccoli to sweet Imperial mandarins and creamy avocados, here is what our buyers are seeing in market this week.

Winter favourites at great value

Colder nights call for proper winter cooking, and Whole Kent Pumpkin is one of the standout buys this weekend at just 99c/kg. It is perfect for soups, roasting, mash, curries or a simple tray of roast vegetables. Stores have ordered plenty, so expect to see it filling plenty of baskets and trolleys over the coming days.

Baby broccoli is also proving to be excellent value, with 3 bunches for $5 this weekend. Broccoli supply remains tight, but baby broccoli is abundant, delicious and a great alternative for stir-fries, roasting, salads or serving alongside a winter dinner.

Citrus season is here

Southern States Imperial Mandarins have now arrived for the season, with fruit quality continuing to improve. This week, smaller mandarins are on special at $2.99 for a 1kg bag, making them an easy addition to lunchboxes, snack bowls and winter fruit platters.

Corn and celery are also continuing to offer exceptional value, currently sitting around 60 to 70 per cent lower than the same period last winter. With strong supply and fantastic quality, these are two produce staples worth adding to your trolley this week.

Berries and avocados worth picking up

Local berry supply remains strong, keeping strawberries and raspberries at great value. Blueberry prices have also started to ease, with even more exciting specials expected soon.

For avocado lovers, Earth Markets is currently ranging both traditional Hass avocados and premium Greenskin Reed avocados. Hass avocados are excellent value at 3 for $5, while Reed avocados are larger in size with a rich, buttery and nutty flavour that makes them especially beautiful in salads, smashed on toast or served simply with lemon, chilli and sea salt.

A quick market note

Iceberg lettuce has been in short supply this week, which has temporarily pushed pricing up after several months of cheaper lettuce. The good news is supply is expected to improve from mid-week next week, with pricing anticipated to ease as the week progresses.
